Influence of shear wave velocity heterogeneity on SH-wave reverberation imaging of the mantle transition zone

چکیده
SUMMARY Long-period (T > 10 s) shear wave reflections between the surface and reflecting boundaries below seismic stations are useful for studying phase transitions in mantle transition zone (MTZ) but shear-velocity heterogeneity finite-frequency effects complicate interpretation of waveform stacks. We follow up on a recent study by Shearer & Buehler (hereafter SB19) top-side reflection Ssds as probe mapping depths 410-km 660-km discontinuities beneath USArray. Like SB19, we observe that recorded Ss410s-S Ss660s-S traveltime differences longer at western United States than central-eastern States. The about 40–50 km deeper if transformed to depth using common-reflection point (CRP) approach based 1-D model (PREM our case). However, east-to-west deepening MTZ disappears CRP image account 3-D velocity variations according global tomography. In addition, from spectral-element method synthetics, find ray theory overpredicts delays reverberations. Undulations underestimated when their wavelengths smaller Fresnel zones reverberations MTZ. Therefore, modelling layering upper must be reference structures accurate calculations reverberation traveltimes.

Spectra of mantle shear wave velocity structure
We applied the stochastic method of Gudmundsson, Davies & Clayton (1990) (which was applied to ISC P-wave data) to teleseismic ISC S-wave data to obtain an independent estimate of mantle structure. We inverted the variance of S-wave traveltime residuals of bundles of rays to obtain a description of the spectrum of lateral heterogeneity as a function of depth through the mantle. The technique yi...
متن کاملMantle shear-wave velocity structure beneath the Hawaiian hot spot.
Defining the mantle structure that lies beneath hot spots is important for revealing their depth of origin. Three-dimensional images of shear-wave velocity beneath the Hawaiian Islands, obtained from a network of sea-floor and land seismometers, show an upper-mantle low-velocity anomaly that is elongated in the direction of the island chain and surrounded by a parabola-shaped high-velocity anom...

Influence of Heterogeneity on Rayleigh Wave Propagation in an Incompressible Medium Bonded Between Two Half-Spaces
The present investigation deals with the propagation of Rayleigh wave in an incompressible medium bonded between two half-spaces. Variation in elastic parameters of the layer is taken linear form. The solution for layer and half-space are obtained analytically. Frequency equation for Rayleigh waves has been obtained. It is observed that the heterogeneity and width of the incompressible medium h...
متن کاملValidation and application of empirical shear wave velocity models based on standard penetration test
Shear wave velocity is a basic engineering tool required to define dynamic properties of soils. In many instances it may be preferable to determine Vs indirectly by common in-situ tests, such as the Standard Penetration Test. Many empirical correlations based on the Standard Penetration Test are broadly classified as regression techniques. However, no rigorous procedure has been published for c...
